Haunted Mansion

The film is introduced by Walt Disney so this automatically means that it is been aimed at a younger audience, and the target audience should be expecting very 2 dimentional charcters, with magic or fairy tale features to the film.

Then some eree music start which is meant to cause a scary atmosphere and suspense , along whihc a dark mansion which appears in a thunderstorm, which goes along with the effect of the music it is meant to stir up a scary atmosphere.

A voice in a "Transulvaninan" accent says "welcome foolish mortals" this leaves the audience expecting characters of the undead such as vampires and ghosts as they are immortal.

Then floating candles arrive to introduct the credits whihc indicates that there will be some sort of ghostly element to this film.

Then first name to be shown on the screen and the only name to be shown before the title of the film is Eddie Murphy clearly indicating that he is the key and main character and as his name appears before the name of the actual film this means that he is the USP of the film and his name is only second to the production company.

Then very large double doors open revealing a party, this is clearly set in the past due to certain objects in the mis en scene , such as the old clock , chandelier, candels,the way the characters are dressed and the stlye of the room indicate this.

Then there are several fades betwwen this party and the credits which display certain object which could link back to the narrative of the film, such as the tarrot cards dis playing lovers and the one of the lovers on the cards being tunred into ashes, this could indicate broken or tainted love.

the writing is in Gold on a black backgroound these two colours are associated with riches and evil, this again like objects may link into the narrative of the film.

then as the opening goes on we see scenes of dispare as a woman possible the wife to a man we have seen at the ball appears to have writtern a suicide note , which then is carried further but another tarrot card that comes out of a hand and is labbled death. this indicates that all these objects that we are seeing are clearly linked into the narrative of the film that we are about to see.

American Physco

Lions Gates logo appears first straight away letting the audience Know that a big distribution company has worked with this film, rising high expectations, as this company distributes block buster type films , such as SAW.

Red liquid on a white background appears like blood but actually is a sauce for a plate of food , this could mean that looks are deciving in this film.



The music plays a very key part in this sequence as the tempo changes and new instuments are added as sonebodiew name or object appears on the screen.


A knife introduces the name Christian Bale. As his name appears first I would be apparent that he is the main character. Being that he is introduced with a knife this indicates that he is some how involved in killings due to the initial appearence of the red sauce we saw previsously.





The knife suddenly cutting the food alerts the audience and possibly gives away the genre to be some sort of horror or bloody film entialing murder.

The music along with the images is suggestive of a mind of a killer as key ingredients are coming together, this could possibly match the narrative to come.

As the food seems to come together a waiter comes along and picks it up. Then a busy resturant us introduced with a pan and the music becomes more cheery, this is a portrayal of an upperclass resturant. Then a pan of other plates shows that he isn't dining alone.



Christian Bale's character is represented as the main through the use of body language and camera shot. Most of the shots are of him or from his point of view and when the other character speak the seem to be looking to him for approval.

Sunset Boulevard

Paramount Pictures, which is a well established company so the audience ezpectations of this film are going to be high.
then we tilt down to the curb which introduces the name of the film, which represents alot of the actyion in this film will have alot ot do with the streets.
fats pace music building in suspence as we cant see nothing but credits.
"William Holden"'s name is centred and in the middle of the two other names which represents him as the key character in this film.
Other names are not as important as they appear in smaller font and larger groups.
But the directors name is very important as it appears by itself in the middle of the screen for a long period of time and it is the last name you see before the action. This represent him as very important and maybe more important that the actors which was very unusal in the 1950's.

Then the camera tilts up showing a road where a few old moto cars are led by motobikes . This is used to help establish the setting of the film of consisting of a lot of action.

The camera used is in black and white this helps the current audience I dentify with the time period of the film.

Then a narrator begings to explain what is on in the world of the film, this is used to help place the audience in the narrative and make them get into the story more.

Next there are fast pans of the cars help convey the urgencey of the scene and they hault at a house meaning that something important has happened at this place.

Then we see a high shot of a man in the swimming pool,dead, this shows that there is someone involved with alot of money as you must have been very wealthy to have a house of that size and with a swimming pool ion the 1950s.

A courrupt society is portayed through the dialouge of the narrator saying " before the hollywood typesget their hands on it , I thought you. Might like the facts first.

Spiderman 2

We are introduced to this opening by the the distribution company which is Columbia Pictures, which is a company with a great reputation of distributing blockbuster films so this will ensure the audience will have a high expectaion of this film because of its association with Columbia Pictures.

This is followed by the introduction of the Marvel logo which has been used in all marvel films such as Spiderman 1, X-men 1,2,and 3 and many other sucessful adaptaions of the marvel comics, so any fan of previous marvel films will be interested in watching this one.

A red background with white writing and also cuts inbetween filled in with blue, red and images these are the main colours of spidermans uniform and very much associated with spiderman.

Again these webcuts are used to show the names of some of the actors and Toby Miguire apppears 1st representing him as the most important perosn in the film , more than likely spiderman and most likely the USP of the whole film.

Then Kirsten Dunst name and picture appears as she is next she is represented as an important character and her picture is the only one in this whole sequence which appears in black and white , this represents her as a pure charatcer and a "see what you get type of girl" she doent appear to have any hidden depth.

Then James Franco's names appears in another web cut but he appears with an angry expression with a purple background. Purple is usually associated with power and money which is usually linked to the antagonist characters which Franco is.

Other characters names appears but are obvioulsy not as important as the 3 characters which came before them because they are not shown with a picture.

Then pictures in the stlye of comics appear on screen showing what has happened in the previous fiolm , helping the audience fit into tha narrative of the film, being shown in the style is a nice extra to the older comics fans and marvel readers.

Also throughought the whole opening the music changes , for example when spiderman appears the music seems to be more calm and when francos characters appears it seems to get more aggressive and faster pace.
